The 'So Called' Holy Grail Foundation: Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk

I think its probably safe to say that 99.9% of people who are aware of the existence of this foundation, were probably informed of its 'holy grail' properties. Yes believe it or not, I was sucked in almost instantly- no thanks to number 1 product pusher of all time, Amelia Liana (who also has a pretty darn good thing going on over on her blog which is one of my staple reads, here). Personally, I think its most popular reference to the 'holy grail' is a little bit forward, but, oh my, there is a reason...

First off I must admit getting my hands on one of these babies was all but effortless. With no House of Fraser or Selfridges under 60 minutes away from me, I had to wait until I needed a trip to Lakeside or a day trip to London. Bizzarly, I actually bought it in Birmingham. A pointless point but that's me for you.

So I picked this product up in a 4.5, as despite being blonde with blue eyes, I have quite a warm yellow undertone and tend to catch the sun quite easily. I would definitely recommend getting tested for this foundation by the counter lady, as there are so many shades to choose from which suit different undertones, that you don't want to pick up the wrong colour. The shade 4.5 is absolutely spot on for me. I most feel like when I wear this foundation, the colour adapts really well to my skin tone. If I am feeling a little pasty one day, or have even applied a fake tan, the colour still blends really well each side of the dial and I absolutely love that. It makes it that much more worth buying!

The Packaging In terms of the packaging, it is absolutely stunning and you really do feel like you have bought something expensive. It is a glass bottle which is slightly frosted, with a shiny black lid. I love the Giorgio Armani clasp which clicks the lid onto the bottle (which is great as the lid does not fall off when you want to just chuck it in your bag!) The only thing is that being glass, it is quite heavy and isn't great for travelling with. (I did manage to get it to Rome, and Prague and back with me all in one piece though so don't be put off!) Oh and let me just add, there's a pump! *excited voice*

The product I am very much a light - medium coverage kinda girl. I do also wear full coverage foundation, but like the product to feel quite lightweight on my skin. I would say that this foundation gets it bang on. It is a medium coverage foundation- say goodbye to red skin, spider veins, blotchy skin and an uneven skin tone (I suffer from most of these!) which is very buildable. It smooths over all skin peeves and provides a really silky looking canvas for the rest of the makeup look. It feels really lightweight and airy on the skin and doesn't leave you feeling cakey. I like to wear this foundation every day and would also wear it for a night out- however this is wear I would begin to build up the coverage.

Application I like to apply two drops of this foundation onto my hand, and then either take a small stippling brush, (my favourite is my real techniques one, here) or with my fingertips. If I am using a brush, sometimes I apply 3 drops for extra oomph. The great thing about this foundation is you can't really have too little or too much. If you need more, you haven't got to worry about the foundation drying and becoming difficult to blend. With this being a dewy foundation (I'l get onto that...) application and blending is extremely smooth. Again if you over apply, you can just keep blending it in and the foundation will still look really natural and totally non-cakeified.

Finish I am completely, 100% the dewiest of dewy foundations kinda gal. When I see photos of celebrities, or magazine shoots, the looks that stand out the most to me are the dewy looks. Also, having extra dry skin means me + matte foundations = not good, and so this foundation seemed like the perfect hit for me. Now i'll be truthful, when I first applied this foundation (which was in a car, over a quickly makeup wiped face, in the dark- a quick change to get ready for the ballet- hence the trip to Birmingham) I was quite impressed. I looked fresh, dewy and not like I had rushed crazily around Selfridges the entire day. When I got home however, I started to feel a little dissapointed as I felt the dewiness wasn't as dewy as I had imagined. I think this was due to having an extra extra extra dewy foundation before (Chanel Vitalumier- LOVE, here) and so I started comparing. But thankfully, after I began wearing it as my daily foundation, I quickly fell in love with it again. The dewiness in this foundation can definitely be enhanced with additional products such as primers, and liquid highlighters, but for the people who are worried about going shiny, it can also be toned down with the use of powder, and both finishes will still give just the right amount of dewiness. Like the foundation states- it is very luminous, it gives you a healthy inner glow and does make the skin look and feel silky smooth.

Skin type I naturally have dry - extra dry skin, with sensitivity, redness and often thread veins around my cheeks. (I called them spider veins earlier). I would say this  foundation would be good for all skin types, however people with more oily skin might want to match it with a translucent powder on the areas where you get the most shine. This will also help to keep the dewiness as opposed to mattifying the skin.

Longevity I would say this foundation lasts really well on the skin in comparison to some of my other foundations. Approx 8-9 hours with a touch up.

Overall, I am absolutely obsessed with this foundation. I love the fact that I can have a really natural look, with this really healthy glow and added dewiness to my skin, without looking like I have been sweating which some foundations can do! I mostly love wearing this on a day to day basis! I hope you have found this review helpful, I have been preparing to do it since I bought it back in February but wanted to ensure I had everything covered as it is such a highly buzzed about product!
